Ustica Marine Protected Area

The MPA Isola di Ustica is located off the north-western coast of Sicily. Established in 1986 by the Ministry of Environment and managed by the Municipality, it was the first italian MPA. It covers an area of 15,000 ha, with a no take zone of about 600 ha, protecting a wealth of biodiversity, sea turtles, groupers and the endemic Posidonia oceanica. The MPA is also a SIC (site of community importance) under the Habitat Directive (92/43/EEC). 

Key competencies and facilities

The MPA has a long history of management, monitoring and tourism development, which have shown positive reserve effects and developed management practices adopted by the italian system on MPAs. The MPAs has participated in several research projects, from science to management, and hosted several conference, events, trainings, etc. 

The MPA has a conference centre, a marine laboratory and an aquarium, all available for research and training purposes.
